Its a privilege to welcome you to CBT Culture. Well done on giving yourself the opportunity to gain insight and relief from the issue(s) that brought you to this site.
It takes courage to acknowledge that you want help. Know that your current sense of discomfort is your body compelling you to act, so your already on your journey towards regaining balance in your life. My Background. If I’m going to be your guide you’ll want to know my credentials. So here’s some insight into my own journey 15 years ago.
I was recently divorced and an area manager of a private training provider in retail and hospitality, upskilling long term unemployed clients.

When I would deliver training, I found that there were many reasons why an individual found it difficult to source or retain employment and I wanted to learn more skills to show them the potential that they couldn’t see in themselves, yet I would see demonstrated daily.
So I took a risk and enrolled as a full time student at Auckland University. As an adult student, with a 5 year old daughter, I gained a Bachelor of Arts at Auckland University, majoring in psychology and adult education. On graduation I gained employment as a group therapist specialising in:
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT)
- Mindfulness and Narrative therapy
I also specialised in Maori models of care:
- Te Whare Tapa Whā/Lifestyle Balance
- Pūrākau/Myths & Legends
Career Progression.
After 10 years I wanted to focus more on individual therapy, becoming a trauma counsellor, where the predominant issues were emotional neglect, emotional dysregulation, sexual violence, drug addiction, intimate partner violence and child sexual abuse, including incest.
These types of trauma naturally result in grief, anxiety, anger, panic attacks, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder and insomnia; appearing to keep the person at the age of when the trauma occurred, where personal growth became difficult.
In 2012 I had gained my post graduate qualification in CBT with Massey University and in 2013 I also qualified as a practice supervisor.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT).
CBT is renowned for its positive, evidenced based outcomes for mental health disorders and has been applied in a number of countries, across the age span.
What makes it different from other therapies is its ability to be prescriptive. This is why it is the preferred method of treatment that our universities advocate as an intervention; that our clinical psychologists apply, our medical professionals recommend and which our government agencies subsidise.
